Instead of a costly, job-killing carbon tax, Ontario PCs will invest in clean nuclear energy to fuel economic growth while reducing emissions
Oakville, February 10, 2025 — As part of the PC plan to protect Ontario, a re-elected PC government will ban Chinese components from all future energy procurements. This includes banning any Chinese state-owned enterprise from buying or taking equity in any Ontario government funded energy, critical mineral or major infrastructure asset.
“Canada and the U.S. need to remain united and focused on the real trade war we’re fighting against China,” said Doug Ford. “If we want to win, we need to fight together, not each other. We’re protecting Ontario’s energy supply by investing in new energy production that lowers emissions without raising taxes, and we’ll ban Chinese components from future procurements to keep our grid secure.”
Doug Ford’s plan to protect Ontario will keep the province’s energy supply secure, reliable and affordable by investing in new energy production, storage and transmission, while banning Chinese components from all future energy procurements. This includes:
- Developing Ontario’s first integrated energy plan, including all energy resources such as hydroelectricity, natural gas and other fuels.
- Refurbishing existing nuclear energy generation at the Pickering and Darlington generating stations, expanding nuclear energy generation at Bruce Power, exploring new nuclear energy generation in Port Hope, and building Canada’s first small modular reactors at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.
- Refurbishing and expanding hydroelectricity generation, including supporting Ontario Power Generation’s $4 billion investments in hydroelectricity generation in Niagara and in Northern and Eastern Ontario.
- Securing the largest battery energy storage procurement in Canadian history, with enough storage to power three million homes.
- Building new energy transmission infrastructure across Ontario.
“As we invest in and build out a secure, reliable and affordable grid, we’ll keep up our fight against the job-killing Liberal carbon tax,” added Ford. “The carbon tax is the worst kind of tax, it’s a tax on everything. Our PC plan that invests in clean nuclear energy will fuel Ontario’s economic growth and help create jobs, all while reducing emissions.”
With an ambitious plan to build out Ontario’s fleet of nuclear power plants and supply chain, including the first small modular nuclear reactors in the G7, Ontario is uniquely positioned to create more jobs at home by powering economic growth in Canada and the U.S., including more exports of energy and electricity to neighbouring U.S. states.
Only Doug Ford has a plan to protect Ontario:
- Building Ontario’s economy by investing more than $200 billion in our plan to build roads, highways, transit and other infrastructure projects while investing $2.5 billion to train more than one million people for better jobs and bigger paycheques in the skilled trades.
- Protecting workers in the face of President Trump’s tariffs by doing whatever is necessary to protect people’s livelihoods, including by investing tens of billions of dollars to keep people working.
- Keeping us competitive by fighting the job-killing Liberal carbon tax and urging the federal government to cut red tape and streamline approvals to get big things built.
- Cleaning up our streets by protecting families and children by banning drug injection sites near schools and daycares and clearing out encampments from public parks with new investments in shelters.
- Delivering better care, including by investing $1.8 billion more to connect everyone in Ontario to a family doctor and primary care.
Doug Ford will never stop working to protect Ontario.
